Our Journey
We dreamed of what Pound Buddies could become.
With the help of many of you, we built a new shelter!
And now, as we look to the future, we continue to
develop a place where shelter pets can grow and learn,
and ultimately be adopted.
Dream It
After operating for several decades in a quickly deteriorating county owned-building, Pound Buddies began dreaming of plans for a new shelter.
In August 2019, we launched Unleashing the Possibilities, our campaign to raise funds and the community generously responded, and despite the pandemic, supported our efforts to make a 25-year dream come true!
Build It
On May 21, 2021, the first dogs were moved into the new shelter! New open air kennels and a large indoor enrichment room welcomed the pups into a dramatically improved environment, giving them plenty of room to romp and rest, keeping them healthier and happier!

Live It
With the new shelter's interior complete, Pound Buddies is focused on what comes next: elevating the daily care and quality of life for shelter dogs across Muskegon County.
This next phase focuses on how the space supports healthier, happier dogs. Through thoughtful programming, increased enrichment, and meaningful engagement with staff and volunteers, Pound Buddies is expanding opportunities for dogs to spend more time outside their kennels, build confidence, and reduce stress. Outdoor play areas are an important component of this work, providing dogs safe access to fresh air, movement, and social interaction.
For dogs in a shelter environment, consistent enrichment and purposeful activity are essential for physical health, emotional well-being, and successful adoption. By investing in these programs and spaces, Pound Buddies is strengthening the standard of care for shelter dogs in Muskegon County and giving each dog a better chance at a healthy, happy future in a permanent home.
