To report a lost animal, please visit Pound Buddies Animal Shelter at 1300 E. Keating Avenue, Muskegon, MI  49442 (see map under Contact Information at left).

Shelter hours to search for your lost dog are:

Monday–Friday                       8 am–11 am and noon–5 pm

You know your pet better than anyone, and the ultimate responsibility for finding it is yours. With hundreds of dogs and cats coming to the Shelter each month, it is not possible to accurately identify a pet over the telephone. The only way to reliably identify a pet is “in person,” so visit us often!

If You Lost Your Dog

  1. Visit Pound Buddies, 1300 E. Keating Avenue, as soon as possible and look for your pet.  The Shelter should be visited at least once every 24 hours and at a minimum of once every 48 hours.  Bring a picture and fill out a Lost Pet Form on your first visit.

  2. Make lost pet posters. Include a picture, description and information on how to get in touch with you. Post them at public places in your neighborhood. Download our sample Lost Dog posters. (Check local ordinances regarding sign posting.)

  3. Check with your friends and neighbors.  Make 3” x 5” file cards with the appropriate information and distribute them in your neighborhood.

  4. Keep in contact with Pound Buddies.  Check with area shelters like Harbor Humane Society (Ottawa County) as well as other private shelters.

  5. Place a paid Classified Ad in The Muskegon Chronicle’s “Pets Lost & Found” Classified section.  Contact the Chronicle’s Classified department at (231) 726-3200 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  If the pet was lost close to the Muskegon–Ottawa County border, the Grand Haven Tribune will place free notices of lost or found dogs for six days.  Contact the Tribune Classified department at (616) 842-0100 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. If You Found A Dog

    1. If you find a dog during Monday–Friday business hours, deliver it to the Pound Buddies’ Keating Shelter or call Muskegon County Vector (Animal) Control at (231) 724-6007.  If the dog is wearing its dog license tag or is microchipped, the owner information will aid in the return of the dog. Any Muskegon County stray dog that is found should be delivered to the custody of Pound Buddies Animal Shelter during scheduled working hours.  Anyone finding a stray dog may assist an Animal Control Officer by holding the animal until the Officer can pick it up, or by delivering it directly to the Keating Shelter.  Remember, the Shelter is the first place an owner will go to find a dog.

    2. Department of Agriculture regulations require that all Muskegon County stray dogs be delivered to the Pound Buddies’ Keating Shelter.  However, should you choose to keep the dog while searching for its owner, make found pet posters.  Include a picture, description and information on how to get in touch with you. Post them at public places in the neighborhood where the dog was found. Download our sample Found Dog poster. (Check local ordinances regarding sign posting.)

    3. The Muskegon Chronicle will place free notices of found pets in the “Pets Lost & Found” Classified section.  Contact the Chronicle’s Classified department at (231) 726-3200 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
